Lin’s sweet-faced girls are a long way from the boys in the folk tale “The Five Chinese Brothers,” who, despite their individual superhuman powers, “all looked exactly alike.” With their hats and braided queues of a bygone era, they represent an outdated Western perception of the East.Īnd yet Ling and Ting are not thoroughly modern. Even the youngest children should find themselves drawn along to the next page by engaging stories that unfold illustration by illustration. “Ling and Ting: Not Exactly the Same!” is a fine addition to the shelf. While there are some excellent books with modern Asian-American characters for older children, there are very few in the early-reader category. Even those dumplings, made using identical ingredients, bear the personal stamp of the maker in their shape and character.
